Enrico Malatesta, Deriva di un Sonno Incerto

Deriva di un Sonno Incerto is a new project by sound artist Enrico Malatesta that combines his personal research on percussion instruments with the dense and complex topic of the role of time/duration in performance practice, sound production and modes of listening. This new series of performances are inspired by the use and re-discovery of an ancient device for indicating the passage of time: the candle-clock. As the candle-clock burns, iron nails installed in the wax cylinder drop into a resonant saucer placed at the base of each candle. The falling of nails, the resonance of the saucer, and the continuous variation of the light of the candle create a continuous flow of changes in space and minute perceptual offerings for the audience.

Deriva di un Sonno Incerto proposes the installation of autonomous light and sound devices (candles) and, within their activity and decay, a series of sound actions aimed at broadening the aural environment, creating a flow of listening placed between rest and vigilance, between absence and the iridescent force of a suspended presence.

Enrico Malatesta is an Italian percussionist and sound researcher active in the fields of experimental music, sound intervention, and performance: his practice explores the relations between sound, space, and body, and the vitality of materials and the morphology of surfaces, with particular attention to percussive acts and modes of listening.
