Field Trip to Burst – Lee Patterson: Field Recording / Winne Clement: Willow Whistle Building 

This year’s festival will be preceded by an excursion — a “field trip” — to Burst, exploring the landscape outside Brussels from the perspective of field recording. During the excursion, participants will take part in two workshops: an introduction to field recording as a way of listening and observing, as well as learning how to handle microphones; and the making and playing of willow whistles, a simple type of flute that can only be crafted in spring from willow wood. 

The workshops will be led by Lee Patterson (field recording) and Winne Clement (willow whistle building), and the excursion will be coordinated by Lukas De Clerck.

No prior knowledge necessary, please bring: a warm drink (or something stronger, if that helps!), wear suitable outdoor clothing, bring your own recording gear (if you have it), bring open ears

Led by Lee Patterson, participants take a springtime walk between Burst and Zonnegem, traversing fields, following paths, crossing highways and byways, exploring sonic surroundings.  Whilst open to the elements and the discovery of environmental sounds perhaps to be heard in the air, perhaps in the water, perhaps in wayside plants, perhaps in the earth under our feet, you’ll occasionally stop to listen and perhaps to record things the group encounters along the way. 

The weather, landscape and our curiosity will dictate what you hear as you take a speculative wander through the countryside of East Flanders to listen to and record who knows what.

In spring, when the sap starts flowing, you can remove the bark from a willow shoot in one piece. This age-old technique has long been used to make whistles or “foepers.” In this workshop, you’ll craft a simple whistle—either a short, basic one or a slightly longer seljefløyte. No complex tools are needed—just your hands and a simple pocket knife. 

BIOS 

Lee Patterson uses sound recording and amplified objects to create performances and fixed works. By exploring chemical and mechanical synthesis, he reveals complex sounds in unexpected places—from rock chalk to burning nuts and insect chants inside plants. His collaborations include Mika Vainio, Jennifer Walshe, David Toop, and others. His work has been featured on UK TV, BBC Radios 3, 4, and 6, Resonance FM, and international stations. Based in Prestwich, Manchester, UK, he performs and works globally. 

Winne Clement , a creator of sound—sound sculptures and woodwinds—has been working with self-harvested native woods for 20 years. Inspired by various traditions and traditional instruments, he crafts new, contemporary sculptures and sounds. Yet, he ultimately seeks his own path, free from folklore and cultural dogmas. Guided by sound and timbre, he searches for the sound from the other side , as the Persian poet Rumi once beautifully described. Trance. Comfort. Purring like a cat. A tangible vibration.
