This workshop explores the fascinating world of radio waves and their creative use in sound art. Participants will learn how radio waves travel, their role in communication and astronomy, and their presence in natural phenomena. A listening session will feature artist Marta Zapparoli’s recordings of space signals, VLF phenomena, and radio transmissions. Hands-on activities include building a simple antenna and using handheld radios to explore AM, SW, and LW frequencies. Participants will experiment with static, interference, and layering sounds to create unique soundscapes. The session concludes with feedback, a Q&A, and suggestions for further exploration.
Marta Zapparoli is an Italian sound artist and performer based in Berlin, exploring the intersection of physics, technology, and the invisible environment. Using self-made antennas, radio receivers, and analogue technology, she creates site-specific installations and performances. Her work engages with “Technological Nature” and the “other-than-human” voices, fostering awareness of our cosmic connection. A member of various ensembles, Zapparoli has performed worldwide, supported by institutions like INM, Musikfonds, and the Goethe Institute.
