Based on research conducted from 2022 to 2024, Zapparoli’s performance explores the transcendental phenomenon of the Northern Lights on a vast scale. Using VLF radio recordings from Norway, along with detectors, antennas, radio receivers, light, plasma instruments, and motors, the piece blends cosmic voices of the aurora with real-time generated electromagnetic forces. “Interdimensional” symbolizes energy movement between dimensions of space-time, creating a dialogue between the “Natural” and the “Technological.” By contrasting invisible processes, the performance offers a new experience of space and time, reflecting on space weather and its technological mimicry in the anthropocene, allowing participants to experience the aurora’s electromagnetic complexity.
Marta Zapparoli is an Italian sound artist and performer based in Berlin, exploring the intersection of physics, technology, and the invisible environment. Using self-made antennas, radio receivers, and analogue technology, she creates site-specific installations and performances. Her work engages with “Technological Nature” and the “other-than-human” voices, fostering awareness of our cosmic connection. A member of various ensembles, Zapparoli has performed worldwide, supported by institutions like INM, Musikfonds, and the Goethe Institute.
