In this workshop, Lee Patterson will take you on an exploration of sound transmitted through media other than air – sounds that can be captured with a number of different microphones or sensors, such as contact mics, hydrophones, geophones, or induction microphones. He will also introduce participants to the possibility of using solar cells as microphones.
Lee Patterson uses sound recording and amplified objects to create performances and fixed works. By exploring chemical and mechanical synthesis, he reveals complex sounds in unexpected places—from rock chalk to burning nuts and insect chants inside plants. His collaborations include Mika Vainio, Jennifer Walshe, David Toop, and others. His work has been featured on UK TV, BBC Radios 3, 4, and 6, Resonance FM, and international stations. Based in Prestwich, Manchester, UK, he performs and works globally.
