An imaginary acoustic habitat of insects and bird calls vibrates under water. Using hydrophones, the singer comments on and transforms the non-human voices, becoming part of the soundscape herself. A game of disguise, blending, and transformation unfolds. Does her voice remain human, or does it become something else? The aquarium becomes a miniature habitat, sound object, and laboratory. The boundary between self and environment becomes fluid, ultimately an illusion behind which a complex and elusive reality emerges. Binaries like animal/human, object/person, and nature/technology are overthrown in favor of mutual and entangled relationships.
Ute Wassermann tours the world as a composer, performer, and improviser. She creates audiovisual performances and compositions for soloists and ensembles. At the heart of her research is an ongoing, uncompromised exploration of her voice as an extreme, multidimensional sound instrument. Her methods for extending and alienating the voice include bird whistles, lo-fi electronics, resonators, field recordings, projections, and various types of microphones.
