Canti di guerra, di lavoro e d‘amore is a contemporary reimagining of female folk songs from the Emilia-Romagna region in Italy. These songs, originating from the early 20th century and the Second World War, are rooted in older traditions. Over time, their melodies and, more notably, their lyrics have evolved through oral transmission, adapting to various social, cultural, and historical contexts. In the music of Tarozzi and Walker, these songs are reshaped through sounds far removed from tradition, grounded in contemporary musical experimentation. The compositions weave together dissonance with melodic impulses, and bruitism with delicate harmonic textures. Violin, cello, and voices converge to create a new choral polyphony.
Silvia Tarozzi and Deborah Walker share a friendship that has blossomed into a lasting artistic partnership centered around improvisation and contemporary experimental creation. For nearly two decades, they have performed together, collaborating with composers and improvisers while showcasing their work at international festivals and venues across Europe, the US, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore. Their long-standing collaborations with composers Éliane Radigue, Pascale Criton, and Philip Corner have resulted in numerous new works. Their projects are released by the Unseen Worlds, SHIIIN, and Potlatch labels.
